100 Interviews is a Web site about people.

"I went to see Pharoahe Monch.

Pharoahe is a rapper who has been in the game for at least two decades. He’s known for his complex verses and multi-syllabic rhyme schemes. Pharoahe is not what the kids are getting today.

Like Kerouac, rappers today also want to seem like they don’t write; that they get into the booth, put the headphones on and lyrical gold comes out of their mouths. It’s an illusion meant to make them seem otherworldly."

Read the entire interview here!

MTV Hive interviews David Banner, Jean Grae, Pharoahe Monch, and Sean Price
Check out Pharoahe's response below, and the entire article here:

Name: Pharoahe Monch

Location: Queens

Pharoahe Monch’s Fantasy Super Power: I would be able to move throughout space and time seamlessly and effortlessly.

His First Time (Reading Comics): I remember there was a store in Queens off of Queens Boulevard – I believe it was around 74th Street and Continental Avenue – and I would ride my bike there and at the time I was collecting so that was the spot. I have this one issue of Ironman versus Thor and the cover is just ridiculously illustrated. The story wasn’t that great but the cover was the main thing.

Favorite Character: Spiderman. I was already into action figures and so on and the cartoon was really banging and the theme song was banging and he was from Queens and that really just put it over the top. I loved his cynical sense of humor, too. As an artist at heart in every sense of the word, just looking at different artists who drew the book and the ways they interpreted the Spiderman character was a big deal for me.

Most Infamous Super Villain: It would be between Galactus. I collected Silver Surfer for a while and just the size that they would draw Galactus at was in my imagination overwhelming – I couldn’t even fathom seeing something like that. He was feeding on planets which was just insane – that’s pretty fearful!

DC vs. Marvel: Definitely Marvel. I thought the stories were better. [DC's] Batman books got more interesting for a while, but for the most part the stories in Marvel were better.

Pharoahe Monch’s Next Mission: I’m working on an addition to the last album I did, the W.A.R. album. I’m writing it as if I’ve returned from war and we’re calling it Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

War, huh, yeah. What is it good for? Absolutely . . . new music from Pharoahe Monch. The complex rhyme spitter released his third solo album, W.A.R. (We Are Renegades), via Duck Down Records on March 22nd. With an endless ammunition of information, W.A.R. has Pharoahe lyrically exercising with the likes of Styles P, Immortal Technique, Jean Grae and Royce Da 5’9.” Being that the Southside Jamaica, Queens-raised MC is easily one of the most socially conscious cats in the game, we asked for his take on an assortment of warfare – including raps biggest battles, the current situation in Libya and the classic Art of War book by Sun Tzu – in addition to breaking down the science behind his own W.A.R. title. — Mark Lelinwalla

In the cult of personality that is hip-hop, sometimes a name says it all, summing up an artist’s mission, motives and methodology more accurately than a thousand press packets. Black Thought and Ol’ Dirty Bastard certainly come to mind. Yet, no name captures an artist more vividly than Pharoahe Monch, conveying not just mere superiority, but a larger than life majesty rooted in a romanticized golden era. Like the Pharaohs of old, his words resonate with equal parts domination and edification, and on W.A.R. (We Are Renegades) Monch sheds the gauze in which he was mummified on the cover of 2007’sDesire to deliver an impassioned revival.

NYC based journalist Richard Torres reviews Pharoahe's new album

For many of us who grew up during rap’s nascent age, there’s a tendency to automatically dismiss much of modern hip-hop. The litany of contemptuous comments can range from complaining that the music isn’t danceable enough – or too danceable for the rhythmically challenged – to a lack of, well, pick one, spiritual, political, social or topical context. In many ways, we of hip-hop’s first generation – the true Generation X – have mirrored the advances in musical technology. As rap’s delivery system transitioned from black wax to cassette tape to encoded shiny silver discs to digital downloads, we evolved from acolytes to record buyers to occasional concertgoers to unofficial music historians...
